First, the strange legal fact
Pennsylvania has roughly a million private wells serving about 3.5 million people — a huge share of them in Monroe, Pike, Wayne, and Carbon counties — and no statewide rules for how wells are built or tested. No inspection, no annual check, no agency that will ever knock on your door. The upside is independence. The honest downside: Penn State's long-running studies find about half of tested PA wells fail at least one drinking-water standard, and the owners usually don't know, because the most serious problems have no taste or smell.

What the mountain puts in your water
Pocono geology is shale and sandstone — not the limestone that makes Lehigh Valley water hard. That flips the story: mountain wells run naturally soft, which is the good news. The trade-offs come in four flavors:
- Acidic water (the Pocono signature). Without limestone to buffer it, rain's natural acidity survives to your tap — many wells here test below the EPA's 6.5 pH guidance. - Iron. Orange staining in tubs and toilets, sometimes a metallic taste. A nuisance, not a hazard, and very treatable.

The testing calendar that does the utility's job
- Every year: coliform bacteria (with E. coli follow-up if found) and nitrate. Late spring is the smart timing — after snowmelt and spring rain have stressed the well.
- Every 2–3 years: pH, total dissolved solids, iron, manganese, hardness.
- Once, or situationally: lead (pre-1986 plumbing), radon, arsenic, and a nitrate + bacteria check before a formula-fed baby arrives.

Treatment, in the right order
Well treatment is a train, and the cars have to be in order — each stage protects the next. The typical Pocono lineup, when the test calls for it:
- 1. Sediment filtration — grit out first, so it can't foul anything downstream.
- 2. Acid neutralizer — the Pocono staple. Corrects low pH before the water touches your copper.
- 3. Iron or sulfur treatment — air-injection oxidation for most wells; peroxide injection when levels run high or iron and sulfur travel together.
- 4. UV disinfection — last in line on purpose: UV needs clear, iron-free water, or shadows shield the microbes it's supposed to kill.
Most homes need one or two stages, not four. The test readings — not a catalog — decide which.
