Well water and your family: the testing schedule PA experts recommend

Pennsylvania has over a million private wells and zero statewide rules about testing them. No agency checks your water — ever. That makes one habit the entire safety system for a well family: testing on a schedule. Here's the schedule the actual experts — Penn State Extension and PA DEP — recommend, translated into plain English.

First, absorb the strange fact

If a public utility served your water, dozens of rules would govern its testing, treatment, and reporting. Because a well serves it, none apply. Pennsylvania is one of the few states with no private-well construction or testing standards at all. Nobody will ever knock on your door about your water. The upside is independence; the honest downside is that every safety mechanism a city-water family gets automatically is, for you, an appointment you have to make.

The stakes are real: Pennsylvania has roughly a million private wells serving about 3.5 million people, and Penn State's long-running testing studies find about half fail at least one drinking-water standard — most commonly bacteria. Most NEPA wells still produce good water. The schedule below is how you get to say that about yours with evidence.

Every year, no exceptions

  • Coliform bacteria (with E. coli follow-up if found). This is the non-negotiable one, per Penn State Extension and PA DEP. Bacteria enters wells after storms, snowmelt, or through aging caps and casings — with zero taste, smell, or visual warning. A yearly lab test is the only detection system that exists.
  • Nitrate — the CDC pairs this with the bacteria test annually, especially near farmland or septic systems. It matters most for formula-fed infants, and boiling makes it worse, not better.

Good timing: late spring, after snowmelt and spring rains have stressed the well — the season when problems most often appear.

Every 2–3 years

  • pH — Pocono-country wells often run acidic; low pH quietly corrodes plumbing (the blue-green stain story).
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS) — the overall mineral load; a drifting TDS number is an early hint that something changed underground.
  • Iron, manganese, hardness — the comfort-and-cost readings that size any treatment correctly.

Once, or when the situation calls for it

  • Lead — once, if the home's plumbing predates 1986 (why).
  • Nitrate + bacteria — before a formula-fed baby arrives (why).
  • Arsenic and radon — at least once; both occur naturally in some PA groundwater, and neither announces itself.
  • PFAS — once, if you want the question closed (plain-English guide).
  • The works — when buying a home with a well. You inspect the roof; inspect the water.

And immediately, whenever the water changes

New smell, new taste, new color, new cloudiness — especially after weather. Sudden cloudiness after rain deserves particular respect: it can mean surface water is reaching your well, and surface water brings bacteria with it. Change is your well's only way of raising its hand. Answer it with a test, not a wait-and-see.

Keep a folder

One last piece of unglamorous advice: keep every result. A well file turns individual snapshots into a trend line — the difference between "iron was 0.3 last year, 0.9 this year, something is changing" and finding out only when the stains arrive. It also pays for itself the day you sell the house: documented water history is exactly what a buyer's inspector wants to see.
