The Scranton / Wilkes-Barre water story
The Wyoming and Lackawanna valleys carry two legacies. First, infrastructure: city water here is treated to standards and tests soft by the utilities’ own reports, but it travels through some of the oldest mains in Pennsylvania, picking up chlorine taste and sediment on the way. Second, coal: a century of anthracite mining left iron, manganese, and sulfates in some groundwater — mostly a private-well concern in affected areas. Head up out of the valley into the Abingtons, the Back Mountain, or Mountain Top and you are in well country, where hardness, iron, and rotten-egg smell are the everyday complaints — the softener story lives on the wells, not the city supply.
