Iron & Rust Stains

Orange rings in the toilet, rust streaks in the tub, whites that come out of the wash dingy — iron staining is the signature complaint of NEPA well water. It starts at just 0.3 mg/L of iron, and plenty of local wells carry several times that.

What causes it in NEPA homes

Ferrous (clear-water) iron

Dissolved iron that pours clear, then oxidizes orange on contact with air — the sneakiest and most common form here.

Ferric (red-water) iron

Already-oxidized particles that arrive visibly rusty, often after well pump cycling or heavy use.

Iron bacteria

A slimy reddish-brown film in toilet tanks and well components — harmless to health but relentless without targeted treatment.

Aging galvanized plumbing

Older steel pipes corrode from the inside, adding iron between the well and your faucet.

Ways to fix it

Air-injection iron filter

A single-tank system that holds a pocket of compressed air: dissolved iron oxidizes on contact, a catalytic media bed traps the particles, and an automatic backwash flushes them away. No chemicals, no cartridges — the workhorse fix for the low-to-moderate iron levels most NEPA wells carry.

Manganese greensand filter

An oxidizing media filter regenerated with potassium permanganate. University extension guidance rates greensand for combined iron and manganese in the 3–10 mg/L range (with pH above 6.8) — a proven choice when manganese’s black staining rides along with the iron.

Hydrogen peroxide injection + catalytic carbon

A feed pump doses peroxide ahead of a catalytic carbon filter. Peroxide oxidizes faster than air, leaves no chemical residue or taste, and shines when iron runs high, iron bacteria is present, or sulfur odor and iron show up together.

Chlorine injection + retention + filtration

The classic heavy-artillery option: continuous chlorination oxidizes very high iron and disinfects iron bacteria, a retention tank provides contact time, and filtration plus carbon polishing removes the particles and the chlorine before it reaches your taps.

A softener is not an iron filter

Resin is for hardness. Dissolved iron below about 2 mg/L can ride along on a softener when pH is high enough — and then only as a side effect. Oxidized iron and iron bacteria foul the bed. Orange toilet rings, dingy laundry, and metallic cold-water taste are an iron-filter conversation. We measure milligrams first and will not quote resin as the stain fix.

Iron binds to cloth. More detergent does not oxidize it out of the well. Once the filter is running, new loads stop picking up the tint; existing stains need an iron-specific wash, not a bigger soap jug.

Sediment pre-filtration + well disinfection

Spin-down and cartridge filters catch ferric (already-rusty) particles before they reach fixtures or foul equipment downstream. Where iron bacteria has colonized the well, shock chlorination knocks the slime back so the main treatment can keep it from re-establishing.

Frequently asked questions

My water looks crystal clear but stains everything orange. How?
That’s ferrous iron — fully dissolved when it leaves the tap, then oxidizing to rust once exposed to air on your fixtures. It’s the most common iron form in local wells, and an air-injection filter removes it reliably.
Is iron in water dangerous to drink?
At the levels found in residential wells, iron is a nuisance rather than a health hazard — but it ruins fixtures, laundry, and water heaters, and often signals other treatable well issues worth testing for.
Will the existing stains come out?
Yes. Once treatment stops new iron from arriving, existing stains clean off with iron-specific removers and stay gone.
What about black stains instead of orange?
Black or dark brown staining points to manganese, iron’s frequent companion in NEPA groundwater. The EPA’s aesthetic standard for manganese is just 0.05 mg/L — one-sixth the iron threshold — so it stains at even lower concentrations. The same oxidizing filters remove both.
Which iron treatment is right for my well?
It depends on three numbers: how much iron (and manganese), what form it’s in, and your water’s pH. As a rule of thumb from university extension guidance: a softener handles dissolved iron under about 2 mg/L, air injection and greensand cover the mid-range, and chemical oxidation with peroxide or chlorine takes over at high levels or when iron bacteria is involved. A free test gives us all three numbers.
Why did my water softener stop keeping up with the iron?
Softener resin only removes iron that is still dissolved. If iron oxidizes before reaching the softener — from air in the pressure tank, a chlorinated line, or simply rising iron levels — the rust particles coat the resin and foul it. A dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener fixes the cause; resin cleaners can recover the softener.
Is the slime in my toilet tank the same iron?
Slimy reddish film is often iron bacteria — a living colony, not just rust. That is a different treatment than clear-water iron. See our iron-bacteria page rather than buying a bigger softener.
