Anode rod swap (hot water only)

If only your hot water smells, the magnesium anode rod in the water heater is reacting with sulfates in the water. Swapping it for an aluminum-zinc or powered anode usually ends it — a quick, inexpensive fix we confirm on site before recommending anything bigger.

Air-injection oxidation filter

A pocket of compressed air inside the tank oxidizes the dissolved gas, the media bed traps the sulfur particles, and an automatic backwash flushes them away. No chemicals, no cartridges — the go-to fix for the low-to-moderate levels most local wells carry.

Catalytic carbon filtration

Catalytic carbon adsorbs hydrogen sulfide and then oxidizes it in place, handling notably higher levels than standard carbon. It needs adequate dissolved oxygen in the source water (about 4 mg/L), which is why we sometimes pair it with aeration — and it improves taste at every tap as a bonus.

Hydrogen peroxide injection + catalytic carbon

For stronger odors, or the common NEPA combo of sulfur plus iron, a feed pump doses peroxide ahead of a catalytic carbon bed. Peroxide oxidizes almost instantly, needs no big retention tank, and leaves no chemical taste behind.

Chlorine injection + retention + carbon

The proven fix for heavy sulfur — university guidance points to continuous chlorination once hydrogen sulfide climbs past roughly 6 mg/L. A retention tank gives the chlorine contact time, and a carbon filter strips the residual so you never taste it.

Shock chlorination for sulfur bacteria

Is sulfur water dangerous?
At typical residential levels it’s a nuisance, not a health hazard — but it makes water miserable to drink and shower in, and higher concentrations corrode pipes and blacken silverware. Either way, it’s worth fixing.
Why does only my hot water smell?
That points inside your water heater — usually the anode rod reacting with sulfates. If both hot and cold smell, the source is the well itself. This one distinction tells us most of what we need to know.
How fast can it be fixed?
Most installs finish in a single day, and the odor typically clears within hours of startup. Vacation homes and rentals are a specialty — we can coordinate around your schedule.
Will a water softener remove the sulfur smell?
No. Softeners exchange hardness minerals; they do nothing to dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. The smell needs oxidation (air, peroxide, or chlorine) or catalytic carbon. If you have hardness and sulfur, we design a treatment train that handles both in the right order.
Why did the smell come back after I shocked the well?
Shock chlorination is a knockdown, not a cure — sulfur-reducing bacteria usually re-establish within weeks to months because the conditions that fed them haven’t changed. If the smell returns quickly, that’s the signal to add continuous treatment like an air-injection filter or peroxide system.
