Around here it depends entirely on your source: the Lehigh Valley’s limestone makes some of the hardest water in Pennsylvania, certain NEPA well districts test very hard, and yet Scranton and Wilkes-Barre city water is officially soft. What causes it in NEPA homes

It follows the rock

Water picks up calcium and magnesium from the rock it moves through. Limestone and dolomite (the Lehigh Valley) make hard water; sandstone and shale (much of the anthracite region and Poconos) make soft, often acidic water.

Hard-water well districts

Certain NEPA groundwater districts buck the soft trend — wells in the Abingtons, for example, test anywhere from 7 to 29 grains per gallon, squarely hard to very hard.

Municipal sources vary

How do I know if my water is hard?

Is hard water bad for my health?

Will a softener make my water taste salty?

How much hardness does NEPA water actually have?
It varies enormously by source. Penn State classifies over 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L) as hard and over 10.5 gpg (180 mg/L) as very hard. Lehigh Valley limestone water and wells in districts like the Abingtons routinely land in that range — while Scranton and Wilkes-Barre municipal water averages roughly 1.5–3 gpg, which is officially soft. If a company quotes you a softener without measuring first, that’s a red flag. The free test gives you your exact number.
Do Pocono wells need a softener for hard water?
Usually no. Monroe, Pike, and Wayne County shale wells tend to run naturally soft — the headache up there is low pH, not scale. A softener quoted without a hardness reading is the wrong product. We measure grains per gallon and pH on the same visit.
What about Clarks Summit or Mountain Top?
Those wells are the exception in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre market: hardness and iron are common, unlike Kingston or Dunmore city water. Treat them as wells, not as valley municipal. The free test is how we refuse to mix those two worlds.
