Lead from Service Lines
Lead almost never comes from Allentown, Bethlehem, Scranton, or Wilkes-Barre source water. It comes from the last stretch of pipe: a lead service line on a pre-war house, or solder that was legal until 1986. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. Crystal-clear water can carry it; ugly water usually does not. House age is the trigger for one kitchen sample — not a whole-house mystery tank.
The problem: the pipes, not the plant
The utility’s responsibility ends at the property line. Service lines, solder joints, and fixtures are the house. Pre-1940s homes may still have a lead service line. Homes plumbed before 1986 often have lead solder on copper. NEPA’s doubles, row homes, and borough Victorians mostly predates those years. That is a reason to test once, not a reason to assume every old house is over a limit. Many test clean because mineral scale coats the joints.
The solution: sample, then RO at the sink
Point-of-use reverse osmosis at the kitchen is the residential defense for the water you swallow — coffee, cooking, formula. Whole-home carbon will not close a lead question. Flushing the cold tap after water has sat overnight helps in the meantime; never use hot water for formula. If pH is low on a well, a neutralizer reduces how aggressively water pulls metal from solder. Utility inventories under the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements are worth checking for your address. What causes it in NEPA homes
Lead service lines
The pipe from the main to the house, common on some pre-1940s blocks. Replacing it is the permanent infrastructure fix; RO protects drinking water now.
Pre-1986 solder
Until the federal ban, plumbers joined copper with solder that was roughly half lead. It is in the walls of most older NEPA housing.
Corrosive water makes it worse
Low pH — the Pocono well signature — acts like a weak vinegar on metal. Neutral water plus old solder is often quiet; acidic water plus old solder moves lead into the glass.
No sensory clue
Lead has no taste, color, or smell at household levels. Looking at the water tells you nothing. Age of plumbing does.
