Acidic well water in the Poconos: the blue-green stain problem

If you've found blue-green stains under a dripping faucet in Monroe, Pike, Carbon, or Wayne County, your water is probably acidic — and that color is your own copper pipes, dissolving one shower at a time. Here's the plain-English story, including the one case where low pH stops being just a plumbing problem.

pH in one paragraph

pH measures acidity on a 0-to-14 scale. Seven is neutral. Every step below 7 is ten times more acidic than the last. Water in the 6s acts like a very weak vinegar — far too mild to taste, but strong enough, over thousands of gallons, to slowly dissolve the metal pipes it flows through. EPA's guidance range for drinking water is 6.5 to 8.5, and plenty of Pocono wells test below the bottom of it.

Why the Poconos, specifically

It comes down to what the rain lands on. In the Lehigh Valley, rain soaks through limestone, which works like a giant antacid tablet — it neutralizes the acidity and loads the water with minerals (that's why the Valley has hard water). The Poconos sit on shale and sandstone, which neutralize almost nothing. The result flips: soft water, low minerals, and pH that often stays acidic all the way to your pressure tank.

What acidic water does to a house

  • Blue-green stains under drips and around drains — dissolved copper left behind as water evaporates.
  • Pinhole leaks, years in — corrosion thins copper pipe from the inside until a pinprick opening appears, usually somewhere hard to reach.
  • A faint metallic taste, sometimes.
  • Shorter water-heater life — corrosion attacks tanks and fittings too.

All of that is money, not health. Repiping a house costs thousands; a neutralizer costs a fraction of that. This is the loss worth framing honestly: low pH is one of the few water problems that quietly damages the house itself.

The one case where it's more than plumbing

If your home was plumbed before 1986, its joints may contain lead solder. Neutral water mostly leaves that lead alone. Acidic water doesn't — corrosion is exactly the mechanism that moves lead from old solder into drinking water. You cannot see, taste, or smell it; the combination of an older home and a low pH reading is the specific situation where we say: add a lead test, once, and know. How the fix works

An acid neutralizer is a tank of calcite — crushed limestone, essentially — installed where water enters the house. As water passes through, it dissolves a small amount of the mineral, which raises the pH to neutral. In effect, it gives Pocono water the limestone encounter that geology skipped.

Two honest notes. First, the calcite gets consumed doing its job, so the tank needs topping up — typically once or twice a year. Second, dissolving mineral into the water adds a little hardness. In most Pocono homes that is a fine trade (the water started very soft); where the numbers call for it, a small softener downstream balances the system. We size all of it from your test readings, not from a brochure.

Is acidic water safe to drink?
The acidity itself, yes — coffee and orange juice are far more acidic than any well.
