The Poconos water story
Pocono geology is mostly shale and sandstone, not limestone. That flips the water story: instead of hard water, wells here tend to run soft but acidic (low pH), which slowly corrodes copper plumbing and leaves blue-green stains. Iron, sediment, and rotten-egg smell are common well complaints, and because private wells are unregulated in PA, an annual test is the whole safety system. The borough centers — Stroudsburg, Jim Thorpe, Milford, Honesdale — have municipal systems; nearly everything between them is wells.
