Hard water in the Lehigh Valley: why it's the regional signature, and what to do about it

If you live in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, or any township between, you've probably scraped white crust off a showerhead and wondered if it's just you. It isn't. The Lehigh Valley sits on a limestone floor, and limestone means hard water — some of the hardest in Pennsylvania, on city supply and private wells alike. The Lehigh Valley's water story is written in stone — literally. The valley floor between South Mountain and Blue Mountain is limestone and dolomite, laid down by an ancient sea.
