Blue-Green Stains & Acidic Water

Blue-green streaks under a dripping faucet aren’t coming from the water itself — they’re coming from your pipes. Acidic water slowly dissolves copper plumbing, and the stains are the visible warning. Left alone, the same corrosion that tints your tub eventually causes pinhole leaks. NEPA’s sandstone and shale geology makes low-pH wells common here, and it’s one of the most important problems to catch early.

What causes it in NEPA homes

Naturally acidic groundwater

Much of NEPA’s well water filters through sandstone, shale, and glacial till that add little buffering mineral content — so rainwater’s natural acidity carries straight to your tap, often at pH 5.5–6.5 versus the EPA’s recommended 6.5–8.5.

Copper pipe corrosion

Below about pH 6.5, water actively dissolves the inside of copper lines and brass fittings. The dissolved copper then deposits as blue-green staining wherever water sits or drips.

Coal-region influence

In parts of the Wyoming and Lackawanna valleys, legacy mine drainage pushes acidity and dissolved metals into shallow groundwater — a NEPA-specific twist worth testing for.

Aggressive soft water

Very low-mineral water is naturally “hungry” — the less dissolved mineral it carries, the more readily it pulls metal from plumbing, even at a pH that looks only mildly acidic.

Ways to fix it

Calcite acid neutralizer

The standard fix: a tank of crushed calcium carbonate that dissolves slowly into the water, raising pH into the safe range before it reaches your plumbing. Media tops up about once a year. It adds a little hardness back — which we account for in the system design.

Acid neutralizer installation

Soda ash injection

For strongly acidic water (roughly pH 5.5 and below) where calcite alone can’t keep up, a feed pump doses soda ash solution to neutralize the acidity — without adding hardness. Often the right call in mining-influenced areas.

Neutralizer + softener combination

Because calcite adds calcium, homes that started with moderate hardness sometimes pair the neutralizer with a softener downstream — corrosion protection first, then soft water everywhere.

Reverse osmosis for drinking water

While the neutralizer protects the plumbing, an RO system at the kitchen sink removes the copper (and any lead picked up from older solder) that’s already leaching — the EPA action level for copper is 1.3 mg/L, and corrosive water can exceed it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the copper in my water dangerous?
At low levels copper is an essential nutrient, but corrosive water can push it past the EPA action level of 1.3 mg/L. High copper causes a metallic taste and can cause stomach upset; long-term elevated exposure is harder on the liver and kidneys. If you see blue-green staining, testing copper at the tap is worth doing — especially for households with infants.
Why do the stains only show up in the tub and sinks?
Dissolved copper is invisible in the glass. It only becomes visible where water evaporates or drips repeatedly — leaving the oxidized blue-green residue behind on porcelain and grout. No staining at a tap doesn’t mean no copper; it means that fixture doesn’t drip.
Will a neutralizer make my water hard?
Calcite adds some calcium by design — typically a few grains per gallon. For naturally soft NEPA well water that usually still lands in the comfortable range. If your water started moderately hard, we size a softener behind the neutralizer so you get corrosion protection and soft water.
Can acidic water really cause pipe leaks?
Yes — it’s the classic cause of pinhole leaks in copper. The acid thins the pipe wall from the inside over years until it weeps through, often inside walls or ceilings where damage adds up before anyone notices. Fixing the pH is much cheaper than repiping.
