Cloudy, Milky, or Gritty Water

Cloudy water spans the whole range from completely harmless to worth-acting-on-today. Trapped air clears on its own; sediment wears out appliances and can shield bacteria from disinfection; and sudden cloudiness after rain is a well warning sign worth taking seriously. Dissolved air (harmless)

Cold, pressurized water holds extra air that fizzes out as micro-bubbles at the tap — a milky glass that clears from the bottom up within a minute or two. Common in winter and after plumbing work.

Well sediment & silt

Sand or grit points to a failing well screen, a pump set too close to the bottom, or a water table dropping into siltier layers — common in older NEPA wells and during dry summers.

Surface water infiltration

Cloudiness that appears after heavy rain or snowmelt means surface water is reaching your well faster than the ground can filter it — and whatever the runoff carries, including bacteria, comes with it.

Municipal disturbances

On city water, main breaks, hydrant flushing, and construction stir up mineral deposits in the distribution lines — usually temporary, but a repeat pattern is worth filtering out.

The glass test (start here)

Fill a clear glass and watch it for two minutes. Clears from the bottom up? Just air — no treatment needed. Stays hazy or settles a layer of particles on the bottom? That’s sediment or turbidity, and the fixes below apply.

Frequently asked questions

My water is milky but clears in the glass — do I need to do anything?
No. Water that clears from the bottom up within a couple of minutes is just dissolved air escaping, most common with cold winter water. It’s harmless and doesn’t affect taste or safety.
Is sediment in water actually harmful?
The particles themselves are usually inert minerals — the harm is indirect. Grit chews through fixture seals, water heater tanks, and appliance valves, and fine turbidity can shield microorganisms from UV or chlorine disinfection. If your well also carries bacteria risk, sediment makes that problem harder to treat.
Why does my well get cloudy every time it storms?
That timing means surface runoff is reaching your aquifer or well bore quickly — through a damaged cap, shallow casing, or fractured rock. Filter the sediment, but also test for coliform bacteria: the pathway that admits silt admits microbes too.
White particles keep clogging my faucet aerators — same problem?
Usually not sediment from the well. Flaky white particles are often scale from hard water, or a disintegrating dip tube in the water heater if they’re plastic-like and only on the hot side. Bring a sample to the free test and we’ll identify it on the spot.
