Two tests, two jobs
A laboratory test answers a health question: is there something in this water that could hurt my family? A treatment test answers an equipment question: what would fix the taste, the stains, the scale, the smell? The lab test costs money because the instruments and the accreditation do. The treatment test is free because the company offering it hopes to sell you a system. Neither fact makes either test dishonest, as long as you know which one you are getting.
What a certified lab test costs, and what it covers
Pennsylvania DEP accredits laboratories for drinking water analysis and publishes the list. Pricing is per parameter, so the cost depends on what you ask for:
- Bacteria only (total coliform and E. coli): the cheapest and most important single test for a well. Do it every year.
- Basic well panel: bacteria plus nitrate, pH, hardness, iron, manganese, TDS. This is the standard home-purchase and annual-checkup package.
- Health-specific add-ons: lead (first-draw sample), arsenic, radon, and PFAS. These use expensive instruments and cost accordingly; PFAS in particular is the priciest common test.
Penn State's Agricultural Analytical Services Lab sells mail-in drinking-water kits and lists current prices, which makes it a useful benchmark even if you use a local lab. County conservation districts and Penn State Extension periodically run discounted well-testing drives, which are worth watching for.
What a free in-home test covers
A technician with field kits and meters reads, at your kitchen tap: hardness (grains per gallon), iron, pH, chlorine, and TDS, often with manganese, sulfur odor, and a sediment check. Those are the numbers that size a softener, choose a filter media, or decide whether an acid neutralizer belongs on a well. They are also exactly the numbers a lab panel charges you for and a good technician reads in ten minutes.
What it cannot do is detect anything that needs a lab. A field kit does not see bacteria, lead, nitrate, PFAS, or arsenic. Any in-home tester who claims otherwise, or who uses a dramatic demonstration (the precipitation "test" that turns water cloudy is a classic) to prove your water is "toxic," is selling, not testing.
When you need which
- Buying a home with a well: lab test, always. Bacteria and nitrate at minimum; lead if the house is older than 1986. Our home-with-a-well guide walks through it.
- Annual well checkup: lab test for bacteria and nitrate, per the schedule PA experts recommend.
- Stains, scale, spots, chlorine taste, rotten-egg smell: the free treatment test. These are equipment problems and the field readings size the fix.
- Health worry on city water: start with your utility's consumer confidence report, which is free and already includes lab data. Then a lab lead test if the house is older, because lead comes from your plumbing, not the utility.
- PFAS concern: check the utility report first (Pennsylvania now regulates PFOA and PFOS in public supplies). On a well, a lab PFAS test is the only way to know.
How to keep a free test honest
- Ask for every reading as a number, in writing, before any equipment is discussed.
- Compare hardness and chlorine to your utility's report. They should agree.
- Ask "what would you recommend if I were on a tight budget?" An honest answer often gets smaller.
- Refuse same-day-only pricing. A real quote survives a week.
- If a health contaminant is claimed, ask for the lab result. Field kits do not produce one.
