What PFAS are, in one kitchen analogy
Think of the toughest non-stick pan you have ever owned — nothing sticks to it, nothing wears it down. PFAS are the family of chemicals behind that toughness, and for seventy years we used them everywhere: waterproof jackets, stain-proof carpet, fast-food wrappers, and the foam used to fight fuel fires. The catch is that the toughness never switches off. PFAS do not rot, rust, or break down. Washed into the environment, they stay — and build up — which earned them the name forever chemicals.
In water they are completely undetectable by your senses: no taste, no smell, no color, at any level you would encounter. Paper or reports are the only way to know.
Why regulators acted
Because PFAS accumulate in people, and long-term exposure has been associated with health effects documented by EPA and health agencies — that is the finding behind the new rules, and we will leave the medical details to the agencies rather than dramatize them. What matters practically is that the era of "unregulated" is over:
- Pennsylvania set enforceable drinking-water limits for the two best-studied PFAS compounds in January 2023 — 14 parts per trillion for PFOA and 18 for PFOS — and they remain in force today.
- EPA finalized a stricter federal rule in 2024: 4 parts per trillion each for PFOA and PFOS, plus limits on four other PFAS. In 2026 EPA proposed keeping the PFOA and PFOS limits while giving utilities the option of two extra years (to 2031) to comply — and rescinding the limits on the other four compounds.
The practical takeaway: the two best-studied PFAS are firmly regulated in Pennsylvania right now, and the federal numbers are still moving through rulemaking. Step one: read, free (city water)
Your utility now tests for PFAS and publishes the results in its annual Consumer Confidence Report. Ten minutes with that document tells you where your system stands. Most systems test fine; the report is how you know rather than hope.
Step one: test, once (well water)
Private wells sit outside every PFAS rule — nobody tests yours unless you do. PFAS well contamination is localized (it clusters near sources like firefighting-foam sites and certain industrial areas), so the honest guidance is: if you want the question closed, a certified lab test closes it. If reduction is needed: what actually works
- Reverse osmosis at the drinking tap — the workhorse. Look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification with PFAS reduction listed.
- Activated carbon systems certified under NSF/ANSI 53 specifically for PFAS — certification matters, because generic carbon filters vary widely.
- What doesn't work: boiling (water evaporates, PFAS stays — slightly concentrated), ordinary pitcher filters without PFAS certification, and water softeners (wrong tool entirely — they remove minerals, not chemicals).
The honest bottom line
PFAS deserve attention, not panic. The rules now force testing and transparency on every public system; the reports are free to read; wells can be tested once and known; and certified filtration demonstrably works where it's needed. This is a solvable, checkable problem — treat the headlines as a prompt to check, not a verdict on your tap.
