Step zero: name the problem before you price the fix
A whole-house filter is not one product. It is a category that includes a spin-down sediment screen, a carbon tank that strips chlorine, an iron filter that oxidizes and traps dissolved metal, an acid neutralizer that raises pH, and a UV lamp that kills bacteria. Each solves exactly one problem. Ask "how much is a whole house filter" and any honest installer has to answer "for what?"
So the first step is free: a test at your kitchen tap that reads hardness, iron, pH, chlorine, TDS, and sediment. On city water around here, the finding is usually chlorine (or chloramine) taste and post-main-break sediment, which is a carbon and sediment job. On wells, it can be iron, low pH, sulfur, or bacteria, each of which needs a different stage. The test result is what turns "a filter" into a specific system with a specific price.
What drives the quote
- What has to come out. Sediment is the cheapest problem to solve; chlorine and taste sit in the middle; dissolved iron, acidity, and sulfur require purpose-built media in backwashing tanks and sit at the top. A problem that needs two stages (iron and low pH, say) needs two tanks.
- Flow rate. A point-of-entry system has to keep up with the whole house at peak demand: two showers and a washing machine at once. That is measured in gallons per minute, and a bigger home or more bathrooms means a larger tank and valve so pressure does not sag. Undersizing to hit a price is the most common shortcut, and you feel it every morning.
- Cartridge vs. backwashing tank. Cartridge housings are cheaper to install and cost more over time in replacements and attention. Backwashing tanks cost more up front and clean themselves on a schedule, running for years between media changes. For light sediment or a small home, cartridges are fine. For chlorine, iron, or acidity, the tank is the right tool.
- Media quality and volume. More carbon means more contact time and longer life. Catalytic carbon (for chloramine, which many regional utilities now use) costs more than standard activated carbon, and there is no honest way around that if your utility uses chloramine.
- Install details. Where the main enters, whether there is a drain for backwash, how much plumbing has to move, and whether a bypass loop exists. Basements with a floor drain near the meter are the easy case.
Put together, professional installations span a wide range, and anyone quoting you one before reading your water is guessing at which end you belong. Your written quote after the free test is the number that matters.
The running costs, honestly
- Cartridges: sediment cartridges change most often, sometimes every few months on turbid well water; carbon blocks last longer. A home with heavy sediment can spend real money on cartridges over the years, which is when a backwashing tank pays for itself.
- Backwash water: a tank cleans itself with a rinse cycle every few days, using roughly what a large laundry load does. It is a small line on the water bill, not a large one.
- Media: carbon is typically replaced on a multi-year cycle, shorter on heavily chlorinated supplies. Neutralizer calcite is topped up as it dissolves (that is how it works). Iron filter media lasts years when the system is sized correctly and backwashes properly.
- Maintenance: minimal for tanks — an annual check of the valve and media. Cartridge systems need someone to remember them.
What changes around here
On municipal water in the Lehigh Valley and the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre valley, the whole-house case is almost always chlorine taste and odor, sometimes with sediment from aging mains. A right-sized carbon tank with a sediment stage ahead of it is the honest answer, and it is one of the more predictable quotes we write. Hardness in the Valley is a separate problem and a separate machine.
On wells in the Poconos and the townships above Scranton, "whole house filter" usually means an acid neutralizer, an iron filter, or both, plus UV where bacteria show up. When a whole-house filter is the wrong buy
- The concern is only what you drink. Lead from old solder, PFAS, nitrates, and fluoride are point-of-use problems. A certified reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink removes them for a fraction of a whole-house price, and no carbon tank does.
- The complaint is scale, spots, or dry skin. That is hardness, and only a softener removes it. A filter sold for hard water is a filter sold under false pretenses.
- The test finds nothing. It happens more than the industry admits. Clean water does not need a filter, and we will put that in writing.
Questions that protect you from being oversold
- "What did my water test at, and which of those readings does this system fix?"
- "What flow rate is it rated for, and how does that compare to my home's peak demand?"
- "Is it a backwashing tank or a cartridge housing, and what does each replacement cost?"
- "Does my utility use chloramine, and is this carbon rated for it?"
- "What does the warranty cover — valve, tank, media?"
