Step zero: find out if you even need one
This is the step the industry skips, so let's not. Hardness follows your water source, and around here the differences are dramatic: Lehigh Valley limestone water runs genuinely hard (Allentown's city supply reports around 13 grains per gallon), certain well districts like the Abingtons test 7–29 gpg — and yet Scranton and Wilkes-Barre municipal water is officially soft, and most Pocono wells are too. Penn State's rule of thumb: under about 7 gpg, major scaling problems are unlikely.
So the honest first step costs nothing: a free in-home test that puts a number on your water. Under roughly 3–4 gpg, we'll tell you to keep your money.
What drives the quote
- Your hardness number. Grain capacity is the core spec — a home with 20 gpg well water needs meaningfully more capacity than one at 8 gpg. This is why a legitimate quote starts with a test, not a catalog page.
- Household size and flow. More people means more gallons between regenerations; bigger homes need valves that keep pressure up at peak flow.
- Metered vs. timer regeneration. Metered (demand-initiated) units regenerate based on actual water used; timer units regenerate on a clock whether needed or not, quietly wasting salt and water for their whole life. The metered upgrade usually pays for itself in salt and water, even when the equipment line looks similar on paper.
- What else rides along. On city water, a carbon stage protects the resin from chlorine; on iron-bearing wells, iron treatment belongs ahead of the softener (iron fouls resin). Sometimes the "softener quote" is really a small treatment train — better to know that up front.
Put together, quality professional installations vary widely — which is exactly why we refuse to publish a fake “typical” range that won't match your house. Cheaper big-box units exist and work — for a while — but tend to give it back in salt use, water use, and early replacement. Your written quote after the free test is the number that matters.
The running costs, honestly
- Salt: a right-sized metered unit uses roughly 6–10 lbs a week — about one 40-lb bag a month at typical grocery or hardware prices. Hauling the bags is honestly the biggest ongoing chore.
- Water: each regeneration uses about as much as a large laundry load. Metered units regenerate only when needed.
- Maintenance: minimal — keep salt in the brine tank, and expect resin to last 10–20 years (shorter on chlorinated water without a carbon stage).
What changes in the Lehigh Valley (and the rest of the region)
Where you live moves the spec, and the spec moves the quote — in both directions. In the Lehigh Valley, limestone pushes hardness readings high enough that systems there generally need more grain capacity than the same household would elsewhere: Allentown's city supply tests well into hard territory, and township wells around Easton often read higher still. The one Valley exception worth knowing: Bethlehem's reservoir-fed city water runs softer than its neighbors, and some Bethlehem homes don't need a softener at all.
Go north and the logic flips. Scranton and Wilkes-Barre municipal water is officially soft, and most Pocono wells are naturally soft too — up there the money usually belongs in acid neutralizing and well treatment, not softening. Same free test either way; very different honest answers.
The other side of the ledger
Hard water has running costs too — they're just hidden. Scale shortens water-heater life and makes every heating cycle less efficient; hardness minerals eat soap and detergent; appliances retire early. In a genuinely hard-water home, those costs stack up year after year, which is the honest financial case for softening: not a luxury, a trade of visible equipment cost for invisible wear you were already paying.
Questions that protect you from being oversold
- "What did my water test at, in grains per gallon?" (No number, no quote.)
- "Is this unit metered or timer-based?"
- "What capacity is it, and how did you size it from my reading?"
- "Does my water need anything treated ahead of the softener — iron, chlorine, sediment?"
- "What does the warranty cover — valve, tank, resin?"
