The anode rod + bacteria reaction
Every tank water heater contains a sacrificial anode rod — usually magnesium — that corrodes on purpose to protect the tank. Harmless sulfate-reducing bacteria in the tank use the electrons from that corrosion to convert naturally occurring sulfate in the water into hydrogen sulfide gas: the rotten-egg smell, brewed fresh in your basement.
Warm, still water
The bacteria involved love exactly what a water heater provides: warmth, low oxygen, and long quiet periods. That’s why the smell is worst after vacations, in guest bathrooms, and in seasonal homes that sit idle — stagnation gives the reaction time to build up.
Sulfate in the source water
The raw ingredient is sulfate — common and harmless at typical levels in NEPA wells and some municipal supplies. More sulfate means more fuel for the reaction. Sulfate itself has no smell; it only becomes hydrogen sulfide inside the tank’s chemistry.
A softener can speed it up
Honest fine print: softened water is slightly more conductive, which makes the anode corrode faster and can intensify the reaction. It doesn’t mean softening is wrong — it means the anode choice matters more in softened homes, which is a cheap fix, not a reason to rip anything out.

Draining the tank and disinfecting it — commonly with a hydrogen peroxide flush — clears the accumulated bacteria and gas and often resolves the smell immediately. If the underlying conditions remain, the smell can rebuild over months, which is why this pairs with the next fix.
Swap the anode rod
Replacing the standard magnesium anode with an aluminum-zinc alloy rod removes the magnesium half of the reaction, and a powered (impressed-current) anode removes the sacrificial chemistry entirely while still protecting the tank. This is the durable fix for chronic hot-water smell — a modest part, not a treatment system.
Treat the source only when the numbers say so
If testing shows high sulfate or hydrogen sulfide in the raw water, or the smell shows up cold as well as hot, then source treatment — air injection, catalytic carbon, or peroxide injection sized to the reading — genuinely earns its cost. That’s a measured decision, never the opening quote.
