What a pitcher really is
Nearly every filter pitcher is a small bed of activated carbon (often blended with a little ion-exchange resin) that water drips through by gravity. Carbon is genuinely good at grabbing chlorine and some organic compounds — the things that make city water taste like a pool. That's the whole mechanism. Everything a pitcher can and can't do follows from it.
Where pitchers genuinely earn their keep
- Chlorine taste on municipal water — the headline use case, and it works. If your complaint is that tap water tastes like a pool, a fresh carbon cartridge fixes the glass in front of you.
- Lead reduction — in certified models — some pitchers carry NSF/ANSI 53 certification for lead, which makes them a legitimate interim measure in a pre-1986 home while a permanent fix is planned. The certification matters; read the model's actual data sheet, not the box art.
- Renters and small budgets — no installation, no landlord conversation, immediate improvement. As a first step, it's honest value.
Where pitchers quietly fail
- Bacteria and viruses — a pitcher is not disinfection. Never use one to make microbiologically unsafe water drinkable; that job belongs to chlorination or UV.
- Nitrates — carbon doesn't touch them. Removal takes reverse osmosis, anion exchange, or distillation — a real distinction for farm-country wells with babies in the house.
- Hardness — dissolved calcium and magnesium sail straight through. No pitcher softens water, whatever the marketing implies.
- Everything outside the pitcher — showers, laundry, ice makers, pets' bowls, and the pipes themselves see untreated water. Whole-home problems need whole-home answers.
- The overdue cartridge — a saturated filter stops helping and can start harboring the very tastes it once removed. The pitcher's real cost is the discipline of replacing cartridges on schedule, forever.
Pitcher vs. under-sink: the honest comparison
A pitcher is cheap up front and keeps costing you in cartridges — replaced every two months or so. A household that drinks a lot of water often runs two. Compare that to an under-sink reverse osmosis system: more up front, filter changes on a longer cadence — and it treats far more, faster, at every fill of the glass, with no pouring and waiting. Over years the gap in convenience and coverage usually favors RO for heavy use, and the RO covers contaminants the pitcher never will. We quote RO only after the free test, in writing — never from a brochure range.
Fridge filters, for what it's worth, are the same carbon story in a different housing: fine for taste, similar certification caveats, and the same replacement discipline.
The bottom line
On tested, safe city water with a chlorine-taste complaint: the pitcher is a perfectly honest answer, and we'll happily say so.
