Chloramine Sensitivity
Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia — a longer-lasting disinfectant some utilities use instead of free chlorine. It still keeps mains safe. It is harder to remove at the house. If someone sold you a standard carbon tank and the shower still smells off, the CCR may say chloramine, and the media may be wrong. We confirm from the report or a residual test before we spec catalytic carbon.
The problem: a stickier residual
Free chlorine is relatively easy for activated carbon to grab. Chloramine is not. It needs catalytic carbon and enough contact time — a bigger bed or slower flow — or it slips through. Taste and shower smell can linger even after a “carbon filter” install if the utility switched chemistry and the tank did not. This is not a reason to skip disinfection in the street. It is a reason to match media to the disinfectant actually in the pipe.
The solution: CCR first, then catalytic carbon
Your Consumer Confidence Report names the disinfectant. If it is chloramine (sometimes listed as monochloramine), we design catalytic carbon with contact time at the point of entry. If it is free chlorine, standard carbon is the honest, simpler stage. The free test reads residual at your tap so we are not guessing from a neighboring town. A written quote follows that confirmation — no website price for a tank that might be the wrong chemistry.

What causes it in NEPA homes
Utility chemistry, not your plumbing
The plant chooses chlorine or chloramine. Your house inherits it. Switching cities or even divisions can change the residual type.
Standard carbon underspec’d
A tank sized for free chlorine will underperform on chloramine. Homeowners blame “filters that don’t work.” The media was wrong.
You still cannot skip the mains
Chloramine’s job is the same as chlorine’s: keep the distribution system safe. Removing it belongs after the meter, not as a crusade against the utility.
Not the same as byproducts
TTHM/HAA5 are a related CCR conversation. Chloramine is the residual itself. Both can be true; they are not the same line on the report.
